My rational for my FMP emphasised on the concepts of illustration relating into product. I researched into how illustration was used in commercial product design, this made me look at shops such as habitat and urban outfitters more in-depth. This made me understand how I could use my initial briefs to help me to produce appropriate work towards my FMP.

I used two main briefs to begin with, one which was to catalogue my room and create an object of desire. The catalogue my room brief, I started illustrating objects in my room to start building up imagery. I found that my illustration had a consistent style without much experimentation, this made the imagery a bit bland with not much interest. This made my resolution to this brief a bit lack-lustered without much to it. I think the ideas of two colour screen prints were good, but not executed well enough. The object of desire brief worked out really well, and was one of my favourite briefs. I learnt a lot of new skills, the ideas of creating a product from scratch. Learning how to slip cast was an enjoyable process but a bit slow in production, which hindered me in other aspects of my FMP. My time management at this moment was not the best, which made me fall slightly behind with other briefs.

My statement of intent had changed quite a bit when I started on my next two briefs. One of which was creating a spread for a musician of my choice, and the other to create some hand drawn type on the word ‘dreams’. I think the reason for me creating two briefs in this way was the Build talk in Newcastle. I thought for some reason that the work I was trying to achieve is not graphic design; thinking more that I should be doing more type based work. I think this part of my FMP is when I started to get lost in what I was trying to achieve to what I had written in my statement of intent. The crit just before the beginning of Easter showed me that I had gone off the focus of my FMP. I found myself a bit confused and had to reconsider my options, trying to find solutions in which I could bring back what I had initial written out in my statement of intent.

Throughout the Easter break I created a new brief that made me recognise my statement of intent. This was another illustration brief and probably the most important brief throughout my FMP. This brief entailed me to illustrate particular rooms within a household. I created a substancial body of work, which then help me to start creating products and how they would fit. I created templates to get ideas of how things may look; this gave me more options in just photoshoping the imagery so it looked made. At this point just after Easter my design context had come on rapidly, I learnt new skills on my behalf towards in-design, and I am glade that finally I have got to grips using the program. This was the first time I had used in-design for a particular brief, and I felt quite surprised in myself of how it turned out. I really want to continue learning in-design more, as I found doing some layout work really appealing.

My final brief was an exciting brief as it brought all my creation together. A product catalogue, I research quite in-depth of how product catalogue operate through layout. I created something a bit different from the quite traditional catalogues, by creating a catalogue through a constantina layout design. I think this way gave more enthasis on the products created. By the last couple of week left in my FMP, I felt everything started to come together quite well. My FMP started to make sense once again of what I wanted to achieve within my statement of intent.

The attributes that let my FMP down, was poor time management through weeks before Easter, and bad decision making in briefs chosen at that moment. I feel though that this period I learnt a lot about how to reorganise and structure something that is going wrong. This is probably the most important lesson I have learnt throughout this module, and something that is valuable towards my future practice. Overall I think this module thought me a lot of lessons, which has made me grow as a designer. Valuable new techniques and skills, and progression in project management.

I created a simple logo, this logo represents the three different section of my book. The book i have created is split up into 3 different sections that are related to illustration practice. The reason for using the rectangular shapes is that they are used with my layout design, this is to keep continuity within my design.

I kept the book jacket very simple, using the logo effectiveley in a minimul design. I called the publication 3WAYS, this means looking at the illustration practice through 3 different methods.

I have an introduction about the contents within the publication. I have my sections seperated into 3, each of them signifying content and page numbers.

Using appropriate props to indicate how the wallpaper design can interact with the room. I really need to consider how these ideas of using appropriate props can effect my work in a positive contextualised manner.

Really simple idea, works really effectively as an image. Using simple concepts of props is a step I should take forward.

This is a perfect way to elaborate on a wallpaper design, using an object as simple as a sofa to define how the wallpaper works. Throughout Lisa Bengtssons website she lay her wallpapers in front of the same sofa, a nice way to put the wallpaper into context. Also I like how the idents of Illustration appear on the right hand side, showing a simple way of defining the designs into the context.

For a wallpaper design in the study, I have decided to create imagery based around coat hangers. I have been drawing a lot of imagery that is related to the study environment, and now can start experimenting to create interesting imagery and pattern.

Using a coat hanger can work as a focal point of my illustration that is going to surround it. I want to keep the use of colour minimal, so trying to create a more silhouette styled illustration that then can be translated into wallpaper design.

Swedish graphic design Lisa Bengtsson designed ‘the family’ wallpaper pattern to add some nostalgia to the home. The pattern is inspired by the walls of the past that overflowed with paintings and other hangings. Users are able to recreate this in their home using the frames printed on the wallpaper. they can add their own pictures or other details to customize the pattern.

Great inspiration of work created by Lisa Begtsson. She is a Graphic Design, but has a real passion Illustration and product. I feel looking at some of the work she has created is a way I want to take my ambitions forward. The wallpaper designs are interactive and fun, I need to find ways in which i can recreated a similar method of approach in my designs.

This wallpaper design by duncan wilson and sirkka hammer uses tiny post-its to cover the wall. Each post-it has four layers to it, each one gets successively darker in colour to create a pixelated pattern as the notes are used. Using this wallpaper is ideal for an office setting and is a visual representation of the pattern of use.

This wallpaper design work well as it is interactive, creating outlines that can be colour in. I need to some considerations of how my wallpaper design will interact with people and the environment.

In the mind of children, walls look like giant blank canvases just waiting for their crayons. parents tired of fighting this fact will no doubt want to try the ‘tick-tock’ wallpaper pattern by mini moderns. the clock themed wallpaper pattern is very spare in white with black outlines but adding colour is as simple as staying in the lines.

After Effects, Creating an Animation of Pattern

I have been using After Effects for the first time since we had an induction to the software. I wanted to animate my pattern, as I thought it could work as a interesting piece for home page of my website. The idea was to create a changing hue or colour balance throughout the pattern. It was difficult to grasp how the file sizes effected what i wanted to achieve, as creating moving colour changes create large file sizes. I tried various ways in exporting the video, from using the most apparent in web animation through Giff's. This still made the quality of the animation come down. I will have to find a better method of creating my animation and keeping the files sizes down.

I have exported a quick time example of how my animation could work. I want to use this for my home page website, I will have the animation looped.

Gradient Development of Illustration

I would say this pattern based Illustration is my favourite one, I think the pattern works well as do the colours.

I have now been doing some further development of. I really like the effect of the gradient, it has made the Illustration become more contemporary. I think I want to take this design forward towards a product. I feel doing some more patterned based Illustration has worked well, I now need to take these ideas onboard into the other Illustration that I am working on.

Here I have reversed the colour, having a black background has made the line work of pattern stand out more.

Developing Pen Illustrations

I like how the cream background enhances the black and white illustration. These are the ideas I need to take further, using colours that make the illustration work become enhanced and interesting.

I have really like how the paint and ink marks have effected my Illustrations, I want to keep the ideas of using multiple medias to enhance the imagery. I need to be trying to experiment more with colour, looking at some of the Illustrators which I've been researching. I now have to influence in the way they use colour within a more black and white Illustration.

I am now starting to bring some colour into my pattern Illustrations. I want to keep the colours quite fresh and contemporary. This design is not as strong as the one below, the colours are a lot more stronger and make the image have more impact.

Lesley Halliwell resurrects 70s children’s favorite the spirograph. The toy allows her to create dynamic monochromatic ink drawings within a fixed period of time.

Her graceful drawings are the result of endurance feats with rigid masochistic parameters; dazzling ripostes to senseless home work given by a lascivious art teacher. The critical mass of the colour field and time taken to complete a drawing is dictated by the amount of ink in her biro, while form is predominately the outcome of whatever Spirograph she uses.superficially, the drawings are much in the spirit of self-perpetuating postmodern process painting,yet they lack the slickness normally associated with such work.

This design has worked the best, the detail of pattern creates depth and interest in the illustration work. I want to take the Illustration ideas from this pattern forward into more designs. I will have to experiment with colour and find the best solutions to make it work better as a design.

Player around with some fills between the lines to create more depth into the pattern.

Think more experimentation with line need to played with.

I think this idea of using peas and a maze could work well, Im not sure that i really want to carry it through as the ideas of pattern. I want to create a more ornate design.

Here I have combined the two Illustrations below. I feel now that combining the Illustrations and experimenting with the line qualities gives the imagery more interest. I am also starting to use templates for what the illustration can go onto, this has given me a better understanding of how the pieces may look.

Adding other elements of imagery into the Illustration are working well, using nature within the imagery is an idea I want to pursue. It is making the Imagery more fun and experimental.

I have started to experiment with paint. The paint stokes have given the imagery more depth and interest.

From looking at some of the Illustration I have created, I feel they need more experimentation with different media. I have created a catalogue of paint strokes into a sketchbook. I am then going to try and combine some of my Illustration with the paint marks that I have created. I probable will need to take the ideas of experimentation, and use other media as well as the paint stokes. This will allow the Illustration to develop into more interesting pieces.

This kind of Imagery will be better suited to tea and coffee mugs, as it is related. I think the Illustration could be stronger with the use of type.

This image I feel is not going to work across a ceramic range, I need to reconsider the formats of product of were it could work better. The imagery needs more, I will have to experiment and find ways in creating a more deeper line quality to create stronger Illustration.

This idea of using cutlery works well, I need to take this approach and create more from it. Creating more Illustrations of cutlery and having a breath of illustration work in this way will help me to develop this idea.

Having a look at the Illustration work that I have produced, I now need to start experimenting in the context of products they will be appropriate for. I have been doing Illustration work that is related to the kitchen environment, so now I am considering applying these to all ranges of ceramics. My final crit did not go as well as I thought. I have found that some of the briefs that i have been doing have not really got me doing the kinds of work that i want to be producing. I have to regonise and re-evaluate what i am trying to achieve according to my statement of intent.

My statement of intent is using the ideas of creating products that have the essence of Illustration attached to them. I need to look at the work that i have produced, and understand were it can fit within product. Looking at the catalogue room brief the imagery could be translated into wallpapers. I need to re-evaluate the imagery that i have produced and find suitable products that can fit as resolutions.

I feel this Easter break is going to be essential and has to give my FMP direction for when I come back. I need create a lot more imagery that can be related into product. My organisation of my project needs to be direct and focused into method of approach.

I am going to write a brief that will help me to organise and order my illustration practise to engage with my statement of intent.

I decided to screen print my final resolution for the Catalogue Room brief. I found using two color separation within screen print a new and appealing method. I feel the stock of the paper and colors are not working, I need to experiment more to create a more athletically pleasing piece of design. I have gathered a lot of imagery through this brief, and now I need to use this imagery to create a method of approach into products. Finding products that will use this type of imagery appropriately.

I really like how the corresponding back of the poster has turned out, the color works more on this side of the poster than the front. I feel still there is more experimenting to be done within color and paper stock to get a more finished resolution.

Two part cast of Coca Cola bottle, created using plaster and clay.

Binding the two part cast with rubber belts. Holding the shape of the cast together, using divots to link the two pieces together.

This white earthenware casting slip creates porcelain castes.

Leave the slip cast for five minutes to stick to exterior of mold. Then tip the remainder of cast out, leave for an hour then remove the mold.

Rationale

I want my creative practise to be based around Illustration. I want to use Illustration appropriately, contextualising my Illustration. This could be looking into product design, such as fabrics, ceramics and wallpapers. I want to contextualise illustration in other ways, I feel the most appropriate way to achieve this is by using live briefs. This will help to create a professional level of Illustration based work.

I have an interest in innovative packaging design and this could be developed through my Illustration practise. Creating contextualised Illustration through innovative packaging design, and this therefore would create products.

Subjects / Themes

I want to explore the themes of magical and fantasy within my Illustration practice. I have looked at Illustration that has an essence of magical and fantasy. By looking at Illustration from this theme, I feel that I can produce very open and broad range of Illustration work.

I am also looking at the theme of desire; I feel that the relation of desire too magical and fantasy could produce some very interesting work.

From these themes I then want to relate them to object. Trying to create a range or ornamental pieces of work.

I will be exploring illustration through the themes above.

I will try adapting my illustration practice into more sell-able products, looking at appropriate forms of product.

I will also have to explore innovative packaging design, taking origami into consideration.

I will be using the print workshop’s, Screen-print in particular. This is a way in which I am going to develop my image making.

I am also going to use the glass and ceramics studios, this will allow me to develop my understanding of print onto such materials. I want to learn valuable skills within the development of such products.

Brief 1: Catalogue Room - One Week Brief

I have found a brief that may help me to gather imagery.

Design a mail-order catalog for the sale of everything in your bedroom.

I have taken the idea of objects in my room.

Create a catalogue of screen-prints more mail order; the thing that is for sale is the print.

I want to create development of imagery related to my room. Producing a catalogue of screen prints will allow the context of the imagery.

Brief 2: Object of Desire - One Week Brief

Create a product catalog for an object from the future. This should be an object that you will desire, but it may be anything from an overpriced luxury item to an essential tool for surviving 10 to 20 years from now. Use your imagination. The market for this product will be an important consideration. Your catalog should be largely image-driven and should use minimal text. It should persuade, convince, and seduce us.

I have chose this brief as I feel I can gain understanding have how portray products in the right contexts.

Brief 3: Musician Magazine Spread

Create a spread for a magazine relating to musician. Create a suitable layout and style that can be related to an article of that particular musician.

This brief will allow me to develop my understanding of layout. I need to establish key layout skills so then this will kelp me to create interesting product catalogues.

Brief 4: ISTD - Package a Dream

Dreams can be fantasies, delusions, hallucinations, aspirations, visions, ambitions, desires… our sub-conscious mind can, on occasion, run riot. This project presents you with the opportunity to record your dreams in a way that others may share the experience of an insight into your psyche!

Illustration from Jaime Hayon. This type of Illustration is very appealing in the types of imagery I want to produce. The use of line quality is very prominent within the illustration, using different stroke styles. I feel that the fluid movements within the lines make the image very magical.

Jaime Hayon has taken raw material such as ceramics and crystal, and used these objects to create interesting forms. Theses forms of objects reinterpret his style of Illustration, making his Illustration style fit with the object.

These ideas from Hayon Studio are a large influence on the type of work I want to produce throughout my FMP. The magical Illustration working with interesting forms, this idea is something i want to take into consideration.

Herbert Baglione is a street artist from Sao Paolo Brazil. He has a very distinctive style of work, using a black palette to create the majority of his imagery. He uses the human figure in a very dramatic way, showing obesity and anorexia. This I feel is trying to relate to human imperfections and extremes.

Looking at Herbert Baglione, I want my Illustration practice to develop and become more magical and have a fantasy essence within it. I have seen a lot of illustrators who play on fantasy within design, I feel that this approach creates really open and imaginative imagery.

Andrew Holders Illustration uses a lot of media. The basis of his work is around screen printing. I love the use of layering in his work, using appropriate colour to overlay pieces of imagery.

Here Andrew Holder has taken his Illustration practice and has adapted it onto 3D structures. I really like his take on having dear heads on the wall, creating a more contemporary piece of artwork.

Piero Fornasetti (1913-1988) is often described as a visionary. A Milan artist, Fornasetti was at the same time a painter, sculptor, designer, craftsman, and an engraver of art books. Drawing on a mix of Italian cultural tradition and surrealist invention, his idea were expressed on every conceivable support, from glasses and plates to umbrellas, lamps. furniture, and screens. The result is a very unusual and highly poetic body of work.

To develop my Illustration practise, I need to apply myself to different methods of print and production. Focusing on different areas of print, using the right methods to produce the most appropriate resolutions. I want to develop my understanding of product design, by using the right Illustration and print methods to create a product.

I also want create innovative book designs that can contextualise the subjects, themes and issues.
